This design+build project involved a major remodel of the kitchen, dining room and family room area of a beautiful East Hyde Park home built in the 1920s. The original floor plan included a very small, cramped kitchen (typical of the era) accessed through a narrow door from the dining room.
The dining room had been reduced in size by the addition of two storage closets during a previous remodel. And a large window in the west wall of the kitchen had been lost as a result of a family room addition in the 1970s. Further, that family room was isolated from the rest of the house, and only accessible by passing through the kitchen and a narrow mudroom.
The homeowners asked us to re-envision the first floor in such a way that the all three spaces could be pulled together and opened up to each other – creating a grand space for entertaining large gatherings without losing the charm of the original architecture.
